HELEN MOZELLE HALSTED LANHAM

Helen Mozelle Halsted Lanham, a native of the Abilene area, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at an Austin medical center. In May 2001, she relocated to Ashwood Assisted Living Facility in Austin to be near her family.

Helen Mozelle Halsted was born March 11, 1927 in Merkel, Taylor County Texas. She grew up in Abilene and graduated from Jim Ned High School in 1943 before completing studies at Draughon's Business College in Abilene.

She married Jack Thurman Lanham of Potosi on September 12, 1945 in Abilene. The couple lived in Amarillo, Florida, California and Oregon before returning to Abilene in 1963. Helen was employed by Abilene Christian University where she retired after 30 years as an accountant in the Financial Aid Department. Her husband, Jack, was a minister of various congregations over the years and also worked for ACU. Mrs. Lanham was a member of the Church of Christ and served in various area congregations.

Helen was married for a brief time to Bartis Knight, a Taylor County farmer and rancher.

Survivors include two daughters, Tyra Kathleen Lanham- Hernandez and her husband, John Henry Hernandez, of Austin, and Myra LeAnn Lanham Beard and her husband, John Wayne Beard, of Dickson, Tenn.; two brothers, Benjamin Donald Halsted and his wife, Albertine "Waggi," of Abilene and Dorman Doyle Halsted and his wife, Margaret "Marge," of Hereford, Arizona; and grandchildren, Olivia Helene' Rayburn, Lena Rene' Franklin, Cpl. Brian Kyle Beard, Nicholas CorBen Franklin, Nathan Hernandez and Michelle Hernandez; two great-grandchildren, Clayton Matthew Rayburn and Nathan Daniel Rayburn; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Halsted of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Thurman Lanham on October 2, 1986; her parents, Bennie Gray Halsted and Alpha Arvilla Ohlhausen Halsted; two brothers, Robert Henry Halsted and Bill Halsted.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Hwy 36 Church of Christ with Ed Headrick officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Potosi Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Lanham's name to the organization of choice.
