[editorial comment]
[Updated as of Saturday, December 10, 2011]

The following is a genealogical "proof" to support the identity of "DEAKINS, F. B. - Oct 5, 1892 - Sept 12, 1899" buried in Atoka Cemetery. To date, we have not identified the family of F. B. DEAKINS.

Current Data:

• To date, the only online reference to F. B. DEAKINS is the TERRY survey of Atoka Cemetery, "DEAKINS, F. B. - Oct 5, 1892 - Sept 12, 1899"
Source: Atoka Cemetery, Coleman County, Texas Cemetery Directory by Ralph TERRY, et. al.

• F. B. DEAKINS is buried in the DEAKINS' area of the Atoka Cemetery.

- BROOKS, Cordie M. (Deakins) - Sept 25, 1900 - May 6, 1950 - "wife of Joe Brooks"
- DEAKINS, Baby - (no dates)
- DEAKINS, F. B. - Oct 5, 1892 - Sept 12, 1899
Source: Atoka Cemetery, Coleman County, Texas Cemetery Directory by Ralph TERRY, et. al.

• Adam Luther DEAKINS and Ada BIRDWELL were married the day before Christmas 1896; F. B. was born in 1892, four years before Adam Luther and Ada were married. Source: Coleman County, Texas Marriage Records, Books I - IV , July 17, 1873 - October 10, 1907 In addition, Ada, born 1880, would have been only twelve when F. B. was born.

• According to the 1900 and 1910 Censuses , Finis Ewing DEAKINS and Sarah Elizabeth KELLY DEAKINS had ten (10) children, seven (7) living at the time of the census. The following is a complete accounting of the children of Finis and Sarah:
- 1. DEAKINS Ida Kelly, b. 14 Sep 1867, Marion Co, TENNESSEE, d. 17 Jan 1868
- 2. DEAKINS James C., b. 10 Jan 1870, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 9 Jun 1954
- 3. DEAKINS George Ira, b. 15 Jun 1872, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 3 Sep 1951
- 4. DEAKINS Adam Luther "Luther", b. 22 Nov 1874, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 17 Mar 1966, Santa Ana, Coleman Co, TEXAS
- 5. DEAKINS Effie Gertrude, b. 22 Mar 1877, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 3 Feb 1962, Lubbock, Lubbock Co, TEXAS
- 6. DEAKINS BALLEW Ettie A., b. 1 Jan 1879, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 27 Oct 1963, Lubbock, Lubbock Co, TEXAS
- 7. DEAKINS Lawrance A., b. 15 Dec 1880, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 19 Apr 1895, Coleman Co, TEXAS
- 8. DEAKINS John O., b. 29 Jul 1883, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 19 Apr 1895
- 9. DEAKINS PHILLIPS Mary Walsie, b. 24 Apr 1888, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 1966
- 10. DEAKINS CARAWAY Ruby Della, b. 11 Apr 1890, Boone Co, ARKANSAS, d. 29 Dec 1967, Lubbock, Lubbock Co, TEXAS

Ida Kelly (died 1868), Lawrence (died 1895), and John O. (died 1895) are the three children who died before 1900.

• Although James C. DEAKINS and wife Dill D. PARKER DEAKINS and family lived in Coleman County, they did not choose Atoka Cemetery as their family cemetery. Also, the 1910 Census indicates Dill had two children both living -- Lettie (b. abt 1906) and Loyd (b. 1909); their third child Helen was born about 1916. There is no indication of a fourth child or a child born in 1892.

George Ira DEAKINS and wife Pearl PARKER DEAKINS and family lived in neighboring Runnels County. The 1900 and 1910 Censuses indicate Pearl had two (2) children both living - Waldine (b. 1896) and Jim (b. 1898). There is no documentation that George and Pearl had additional children. In addition, they were married in Novice, Coleman Co, TEXAS on 12 Jan 1896, four years after DEAKINS, F. B. was born in Oct 5, 1892.

• There are eight (8) DEAKINS surnames buried in Atoka Cemetery all related to Finis EWING DEAKINS and Sarah Elizabeth KELLY DEAKINS. Lawrence and John O., the sons of Finis and Sarah, were the first DEAKINS to be buried in Atoka Cemetery; the died in 1895. The next DEAKINS buried in Atoka Cemetery was F. B. in 1899. (Note: There is no death date for Baby DEAKINS buried in Atoka Cemetery, but Baby must have lived and died between 1896 and 1899.) So, the DEAKINS family had established Atoka Cemetery as their family cemetery by 1895.

Current Theory:
F. B. was not the child of Finis and Sarah, nor was F. B. the child of any of their sons who lived to adulthood, James C. and Dill, George Ira and Pearl or Adam Luther and Ada.

Finis had four brothers and three half-brothers, none of whom moved to TEXAS. However, a search of FindAGrave for DEAKINS buried in TEXAS yields almost a hundred DEAKINS buried other than Atoka Cemetery. Perhaps F. B. was the child of visiting DEAKINS relatives, who buried F. B. with the DEAKINS family in Atoka Cemetery instead of taking the body "home" -- in state or out of state.
